Tango activities in Marseille are among the oldest ones in Europe, as "tango arrived in Europe thanks to the Sarmiento boat (now a naval museum in Buenos Aires) in 1906", the legend says. Like everywhere, these activities were about to disappear until the beginning of 90's when a small group of tango afficionados created the non profit association "Les Trottoirs de Marseille" in 1993.

Since, many tango schools and associations - non profit assocations are the most common type of organisation for tango in France - have been created, the current list (September 2008) is more or less as follows (ordered by historical order of creation):
